Proyecto Erasmus+ Capacity Building: World Pendulum Alliance

The World Pendulum Alliance (WP@ELAB) project is a three-year initiative approved for funding under Erasmus+ – KA2 Cooperation for Innovation and the Exchange of Good Practices •Capacity Building in the Field of Higher Education of the European Commission.

The project is coordinated by IST, Instituto Superior Técnico – Universidade de Lisboa (Lisbon, Portugal). WP@ELAB aims to improve the quality of higher education, in the fields of mathematics and science, by deploying a global network of remote experiments.

This international collaboration seeks to share knowledge, time and skills to solve situations of common interest, such as developing skills in STEM, and in this particular case physics.

In March 2020, the UTP inaugurated its Science Dissemination Center with the pendulum and held a workshop on the use of the pendulum network. The workshop was given by Prof. Horacio Fernandes of the Lisbon Technician, a professor at the University of Barcelona, Spain and a prof. from the Technical University of the Czech Republic in Prague. In July 2020, the UTP held a webinar on the use of remote pendulums. See: and

This year, as part of the project, the MOOC of Experimental Physics was launched, first the UTP participated in the version for teachers. Subsequently, from October 4 to November 16, the MOOC was developed with the participation of students and teachers. On behalf of the UTP, 7 professors and 253 physics students 1 participated. Of that total, 185 managed to complete the MOOC, 86 with high scores.

We are satisfied with the results achieved so far. We already have the secondary pendulums that will be installed soon in each Regional Center. These dissemination centers will be available to receive high school students and thus motivate students for engineering and science majors, involving physics.

Versions of the MOOC made

1st Version: Experimental Physics MOOC – II Semester 2020

It ran from October 5 to November 16, 2020.

2nd Version: Experimental Physics MOOC – I Semester 2021

It ran from April 21 to May 31, 2021.

3rd Version: Experimental Physics MOOC – II Semester 2021

It will run from October 18 to December 1, 2021.
